Navigating the SEND system can feel overwhelming. The good news is there are many organisations across the UK offering free, impartial advice and support to families of children with special educational needs and disabilities.

Impartial Advice & Information
These organisations offer free, independent advice on SEN education rights, EHCPs, school placements and the SEND system. They are not connected to your local authority and work entirely in the interests of families.
SENDIASS
FreeEvery local authority in England is legally required to provide a free SENDIASS. Trained SEND specialists offer impartial advice on education, health and social care rights including EHCPs, school placements and exclusions.

Where can I get free SEN advice in the UK?
Every local authority in England must provide a free SENDIASS (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Information, Advice and Support Service). You can also contact IPSEA, SOS!SEN and Contact for free, independent advice on SEN education, EHCPs, benefits and family support.
Who can help me with an EHCP application or appeal?
Your local SENDIASS can help with every stage of the EHCP process. IPSEA provides free template letters and legal guides for EHCP applications, amendments and appeals. SOS!SEN offers walk-in advice centres and a telephone helpline. For legal representation at tribunal, Coram Children's Legal Centre offers free initial advice.
Is there free legal advice for SEN tribunal cases?
Yes. IPSEA and SOS!SEN both provide free, legally-based advice on SEN tribunals. Coram Children's Legal Centre offers free initial legal advice and may provide representation through legal aid. Global Mediation offers free SEND mediation as an alternative to tribunal.
What is SENDIASS and how do I find my local one?
SENDIASS stands for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Information, Advice and Support Service. Every local authority in England must provide one by law. You can find yours by visiting sendiass.org or searching for your local authority's SENDIASS online. The service is free and impartial.
Where can I find parent support groups for SEN families?
The National Network of Parent Carer Forums (NNPCF) connects over 150 local parent carer forums across England. The National Autistic Society runs a Parent to Parent peer support line (0808 800 4106). Special Needs Jungle is a parent-led online community with guides, news and resources.
